Experimentation is at the heart of my artwork: taking an idea and seeing where it leads me. Painting, collage and stitching all working together. I started learning watercolour painting in 2008 gradually, moving into mixed media. My Mother taught my sisters and I how to sew and in our teenage years, we made our own clothes. So, attending a Cas Holmes textile workshop in 2012 opened a new opportunity to incorporate paint and stitch. For a number of years, I concentrated on stitching with my old sewing machine mainly into paintings on paper. In the last year, I've become addicted to hand stitching on painted fabrics for framed work but also, making small artist books. I see stitching as a fascinating mark making process. Living in the Dorset countryside, I have endless inspiration in nature. But I like to work on a project exploring the subject by drawing, painting, printing, stitching …Suddenly, the way forward becomes clear. Recent projects have included: ‘Little Angels’ watching and drawing the 0-3 year olds in our village playgroup; ‘Winter hedgerows and brambles’ and the latest ‘Walk and sketch on scrap paper or fabric strips’. |
